Not only because development and the environment must work together, but also because <strong>79.9 per cent of Malagasy people live on or below the global poverty baseline<\/strong> of \u00a31.73 per day. <strong>Eighty per cent of Malagasy people rely on agriculture<\/strong> for their income and\/or survival, many of them on subsistence farming.<\/h4>\n<h4>This poverty impacts people severely. <strong>More than five per cent<\/strong> (50.6 per 1,000) <strong>of Malagasy children die before they reach their fifth birthday<\/strong>, compared to 3.7 per cent as a global average, and 0.4 per cent in the UK.<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22052 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_20181120_113034-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_20181120_113034-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_20181120_113034-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_20181120_113034-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_20181120_113034-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_20181120_113034-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_20181120_113034-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Simultaneously, even though Madagascar is a &#8216;carbon sink&#8217; \u2013 one of only four countries in the world agreed to absorb more carbon than it emits \u2013 <strong>the impacts of man-made climate catastrophe are particularly harsh here: droughts and floods ruin crops, while extreme rainfalls wash away fertile soil<\/strong> which will not be replaced within the probable life of humanity as a species.<\/h4>\n<h4>The temptation \u2013 and without accessible alternatives almost the necessity \u2013 is to remove trees to &#8216;free&#8217; more land for farming: destroying habitats for animals, and harming the forests on which we all rely.<\/h4>\n<h4>That&#8217;s where we come in.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>RFL directly addresses all these challenges<\/strong>, helping people access incomes and food, which we all need and deserve, while actively growing and protecting the forests we all also need, and the animals within them need and deserve.<\/h4>\n<h4>One example is <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/enabling-youths-to-lead-lemur-conservation-in-eastern-madagascar\/\">Youths for Lemurs<\/a>, a project which since 2021 has been helping young people to champion (and benefit from) development and the environment.<\/h4>\n<h4>Working with Madagasikara Voakajy, MfM&#8217;s project focuses on reducing the need for forest clearance, which significantly threatens lemurs. One practice in eastern Madagascar was to use slash-and-burn &#8216;forestry&#8217; techniques, in which forests were burnt to clear space for rice cultivation.<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22054 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20240902-WA0035-1-300x259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20240902-WA0035-1-300x259.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20240902-WA0035-1-1024x883.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20240902-WA0035-1-768x662.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20240902-WA0035-1-600x517.jpg 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20240902-WA0035-1.jpg 1241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.endangeredspeciesinternational.org\/news_nov17.html#:~:text=According%20to%20last%20surveys%2C%20population,in%20zoos%20around%20the%20world.\">Endangered Species International<\/a> reports that: &#8216;<em>The population of the lemur has fallen to\u00a0between 2,000 and 2,500 animals in the wild, a highly disturbing 95% decrease in the last 17 years.&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0 There are now fewer ring-tailed lemurs living in the wild than in zoos around the world: creating habitats which help the lemur population survive is incredibly important.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Youth for Lemurs has educated 239 young people in Eastern Madagascar on sustainable farming practices. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>They have <strong>enhanced yields, introduced aromatic and medicinal plants, and promote ethical marketing, and have become the driving force behind our conservation efforts.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>And they are, crucially, also sharing that knowledge. Those 239 young people have carried out 356 awareness sessions and 19 reforestation activities, reaching 4,711 people.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>As in all our RFL projects, Malagasy people are being empowered to help themselves, help other Malagasy people and help the wildlife and wider environment around them.<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22055 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Picture1-300x212.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Picture1-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Picture1.png 416w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Maxime, a 26-year-old from Ampahitra, 13km from Moramanga, explains: &#8216;<span style=\"color: #646839;\"><em>I joined the\u00a0Pronki\u00a0group, an environmental protection initiative, in 2019 after the Madagasikara Voakajy team <\/em><em>helped me<\/em><em> realise the urgent need to protect our biodiversity and lemurs.<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>&#8216;<span style=\"color: #646839;\"><em>Our group joined the RFL project.\u00a0As farmers,\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0learning new techniques and raising awareness about the importance of\u00a0the\u00a0environment. We also conduct regular patrols and report violations to the authorities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8216;<\/span><span style=\"color: #646839;\"><em>As a result of this project, we&#8217;ve noticed remarkable changes.\u00a0For example, we now cultivate the same plot for multiple years and use fewer seeds, reducing seed usage from 65 per cent to 50 per cent<\/em>.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>&#8216;<span style=\"color: #646839;\"><em>We&#8217;re planting new trees and we look after the forests, reporting when people come to chop down trees, and we&#8217;re setting up a larger cooperative with 50 members, to pool our expertise and grow and distribute rice, ginger, beans and other crops.
