world&#8217;s most prestigious international conservation award: we congratulate him and hope he, and we, can register many more successes in our work to protect and expand the Malagasy rainforests, help the flora and fauna within them to thrive, and help Malagasy people lift themselves from hunger and poverty.<\/em><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/h4>\n<h4>A Malagasy scientist has won the \u2018Nobel Prize for Animal Conservation\u2019 following years of discovery, protecting Madagascar\u2019s wildlife and natural spaces, and training young Malagasy people to potect the island\u2019s flora and fauna.<\/h4>\n<h4>Lily-Arison Ren\u00e9 de Roland won the Indianapolis Prize, US$250,000, an international award given each year to a person or people who have made \u2018extraordinary contributions to conservation efforts\u2019.<\/h4>\n<h4>Ren\u00e9 de Roland has so far dedicated 33 years of his life to conservation in Madagascar, having joined the Peregrine Foundation \u2013 dedicated to studying and protecting the Peregrine Falcon \u2013 as an undergraduate in 1992.<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22616 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Madagascar-Pochard-300x149.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Madagascar-Pochard.png 936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Since then, his achievements include in 2006 rediscovering the Madagascar Pochard, a duck thought to have become extinct in the 1990s, contributing to the discovery of two lemur species which had never before been described, and in 2022 leading a team which rediscovered the Dusky Tetraka, a small songbird which had not been seen in the wild since 1998.<\/h4>\n<h4>He has helped create four national protected areas in Madagascar totalling more than 1,500 square miles in area, and including rainforests and dry forests, wetlands, mangroves and savannas.<\/h4>\n<h4>And he has mentored more than 100 Malagasy students and currently oversees a team of 48 Malagasy conservationists.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22614 alignright\" reflects a number of issues extremely close to Money for Madagascar, including that Madagascar contains five per cent of all the plant and animal species on Earth, and four in every five of those is found only there.<\/h4>\n<h4>But there are more than 600 endangered species of flora and fauna in Madagascar, and more than 3,900 are threatened (the \u2018level\u2019 above threatened is endangered. The \u2018level\u2019 above endangered is extinct).<\/h4>\n<h4>And more than 80 per cent of the Malagasy wilderness has already been destroyed, while at current rates of deforestation what remains of the country\u2019s rainforest will be completely gone in just 40 years.<\/h4>\n<h4>Like Ren\u00e9 de Roland, who has also worked to develop a \u2018community-based model\u2019 focussed on \u2018the drivers\u2019 of what he calls \u2018human-wildlife conflicts\u2019, we know that part of the crisis of malagasy wildlife and wilderness is driven by human desperation.<\/h4>\n<h4>Madagascar is the world\u2019s fourth-poorest state. Almost two million (1.94m) Malagasy people are experiencing \u2018severe food shortage\u2019, the worst state of hunger below famine. Many more experence daily hunger, and 50 per cent of Malagasy children suffer stunting caused by malnutrition.<\/h4>\n<h4>Malagasy people feel an understandable and just urge to increase their incomes and access to food, and this has led to the removal of forests to attempt to free more land for farming.<\/h4>\n<h4>We are working in Madagascar with Malagasy communities facing these challenges, working with them to identify their needs and hopes, and providing them with the skills, training and equipment, as well as finance models, they need to improve incomes and escape hunger, while expanding and protecting the Malagasy wilderness and the marvels it contains.<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21919 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/vegetable-garden-income-generating-activities-of-a-womens-association-savings-group-in-Maintirano-1-scaled-e1742220656373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"837\" height=\"558\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>You can find out more about this vital work, <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/forests-and-livelihoods\/the-green-give-22-29-april-2025\/resilient-forests-and-livelihoods-what-it-is-and-why-its-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, and its excellent outcomes so far, <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/forests-and-livelihoods\/resilient-forests-and-livelihoods-30-months-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/h4>\n<h4>In 2023, Ren\u00e9 de Roland told <em>The Explorer\u2019s Club<\/em>: \u2018<span style=\"color: #646839;\"><em>I aspire to conserve Madagascar\u2019s biodiversity, develop the next generation of conservationists, and improve the lives of my fellow citizens.
