Set up in 1986 in response to famine and other severe challenges facing Malagasy people, Money for Madagascar works with and for Malagasy men, women and children, helping them improve their lives and livelihoods, while also protecting the unique environment in which they live.<\/h4>\n

Madagascar is famous for its astonishing flora and fauna. Five per cent of all the world\u2019s plant and animal species are indigenous to the island, and 90 per cent of species found there are endemic. They are vital to global medicine and other products.<\/h4>\n

But it is a country in crisis. After decades of economic disarray, its income, healthcare and education levels are among the lowest in the world: 79.7 per cent of Malagasy people live on less than \u00a31.73 per day \u2013 the global poverty baseline.\u00a0This poverty, as well as population growth and international demand, is putting enormous pressure on Madagascar’s precious rainforest, which protects us all, but more than half of which has disappeared.<\/h4>\n

Madagascar is a carbon sink \u2013 one of very few states in the world which removes more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. In spite of this, its people are at huge risk from the impacts of climate catastrophe, including soil loss, floods and extreme droughts.<\/h4>\n

In the face of this severe social and environmental crisis, UK charity, Money for Madagascar continues to work to help the Malagasy people to take charge of their own destiny, and protect the unique forests on which we all \u2013 plant, animal and human civilisation – rely.<\/h4>\n

MfM is a Malagasy-led organisation.<\/h4>\n

Our CEO, programmes team and financial officers are based at our head office in Antananarivo, Madagascar.<\/h4>\n

Our fundraising, communications and partnerships team, as well as some administrators, work from our support office in Lancaster, UK.<\/h4>\n

Our patrons, Dr Lee Durrell, Hilary Bradt, Drs Barbara and Allan Prys-Williams, and the Rt Honourable Lord Anderson of Swansea, are experts in international development and Malagasy wildlife and history.<\/strong><\/h4>\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n

Our aims remain the same today as they were at our founding in 1986. We aim to fund local solutions and enable the Malagasy people to take charge of their own destiny. Our projects tackle many of the key issues facing Madagascar today: extreme poverty, poor health and education, food insecurity, the destruction of natural forests and the loss of bio-diversity, We also respond to emergencies, from cyclone relief to feeding programmes for street kids and their families. We always aim to keep our running costs low to maximise the benefit to those who need it most. With modest resources we have built a record that we are proud of.
