More than 90 per cent live on less than \u00a32.30 per day.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>UNDP reports that Madagascar is the world\u2019s third poorest nation in terms of access to food and school attendance \u2013 behind only Haiti and Afghanistan.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Half of all Malagasy children suffer stunting due to malnutrition, and that malnutrition is chronic in 40 per cent of the nation\u2019s young people.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>One in ten Malagasy children do not even reach their 10<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, while four in ten do not finish primary school due to hunger, ill-health and poverty.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>More than 1.32m Malagasy men, women and children are living under high levels of acute food insecurity: they lack sufficient food to meet their basic needs, threatening their health, strength, ability to work and their lives. The next level of food shortage is famine.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Many, many more Malagasy people suffer hunger daily. Most miss at least one meal per day. The threat to health and welfare is clear.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Health can also be threatened from other sources.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Only 36 per cent of Malagasy people have access to electricity \u2013 a number which drops to 11 per cent of people in rural communities. This means they are forced to burn wood to cook with, and paraffin or kerosene for light when the sun goes down.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Wood smoke, and even more so that from paraffin and kerosene, can be extremely harmful. And the threat of fire is an ever-present in these Malagasy homes. Equally, many people simply cannot afford the fuel to light their rooms: when the sun goes down, the light disappears. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>And Madagascar is the world\u2019s least developed country: 80 per cent of Malagasy people rely on agriculture \u2013 in many cases subsistence farming \u2013 for income or food.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Even this means of survival is under threat: although Madagascar is one of only four \u2018carbon sinks\u2019 \u2013 states which absorb more carbon from the atmosphere than they emit \u2013 on Earth, climate catastrophe is hitting the island, and its people, hard.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21557 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ISS008-E-19233-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ISS008-E-19233-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ISS008-E-19233.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Drought and floods are ruining Malagasy people\u2019s crops. Extreme rain events are washing away the island\u2019s fertile soil. Climate change is <em>not<\/em> of Malagasy people\u2019s making, but it is hitting them at least as hard as anyone on Earth. \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Under these circumstances, there is a clear motivation \u2013 perhaps even a driving need \u2013 for Malagasy people to try to increase their earning and food production capacities by taking more land from the forests.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>But this, too, is catastrophic.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Madagascar has already lost 80 per cent of its natural areas, and loses around 200,000ha. of its forests per year. If this rate of deforestation continues, the Malagasy forest will be gone in just 40 years.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21953 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/tenrec-1-300x182.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/tenrec-1-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/tenrec-1-1024x620.png 1024w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/tenrec-1-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/tenrec-1-240x145.png 240w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/tenrec-1-600x363.png 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/tenrec-1.png 1429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This will, of course, destroy the beautiful Malagasy plants and animals \u2013 four-fifths of which are found nowhere else on Earth \u2013 meaning we will no longer be able to enjoy them, or in the case of medicinal plants, benefit from their healing properties.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>We know that we all \u2013 every living thing on Earth \u2013 rely on the rainforests for air, for environmental balance and to reduce and mitigate against the worst effects of the looming climate catastrophe.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>And we should also remember that like every living thing on Earth, those plants and animals have a right to be where they are, and to live as undisturbed as possible.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>And at present, they are not able to do that.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22410 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG-20250402-WA0013-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG-20250402-WA0013-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG-20250402-WA0013-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG-20250402-WA0013-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG-20250402-WA0013-1-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG-20250402-WA0013-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There are more ring-tailed lemurs in zoos than in the Malagasy rainforest. There are 600 endangered species of animals and plants in Madagascar, and more than 3,900 are threatened (the \u2018level\u2019 above threatened is endangered: the \u2018level\u2019 above endangered is extinct).<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>And the removal of forest does not even benefit Malagasy people for long: the exposed soil retains its fertility for only a short period, and in many cases is washed away.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><em>That<\/em><\/strong><strong> is why we do what we do.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Our programmes work with Malagasy people to help them develop their own solutions to the problems and challenges they identify.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/education-for-life\/progress-report-education-for-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Education for Life<\/a> helps young people and adults access food and clean water, and improve their health and their education,<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22525 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hands-up-high-res-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/helping-vulnerable-children\/reaching-children-improving-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children for the Future<\/a> helps children who have \u2018fallen out\u2019 of the system: with our Malagasy partners we help them back to school, provide them with physical and mental care, food and shelter until they can reunite with their families, if that is possible.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/forests-and-livelihoods\/the-green-give-22-29-april-2025\/resilient-forests-and-livelihoods-what-it-is-and-why-its-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renewable Forests and Livelihoods<\/a> we deliver training, information, skills and equipment which empower Malagasy people to increase food production and income while protecting their soil, and expanding the Malagasy rainforest.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>And as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/the-solar-united-consortium\/efl-and-sum-setting-an-example-for-malagasy-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUM consortium<\/a>, we are ensuring Malagasy men, women and children have reliable, safe power from solar energy, with which to power their homes.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
