On Friday the 25th of October, MfM is joining forces with the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis in Cumbria to celebrate World Lemur Day by launching our ‘Big Lemur Bounce’!
The ‘Lemur Bounce’ launch day will provide an opportunity for visitors to the zoo to learn about Madagascar, its unique wildlife and habitats, and the threats that they face. It will also be a chance for children to have a ‘bouncing good time’, with the real lemurs. Activities at the ‘Oasis’ this World Lemur Day include special talks and feeds, plus and fun and energetic activities. There will be Malagasy music, bouncing games and lemur costume making. It will be an opportunity to find out about how to organise a sponsored ‘lemur bounce event’
Working in partnership with Lancashire and Cumbria schools, MfM and The Wildlife Oasis are also leaping to launch their new Lemur Bounce School Pack. Bursting with fun lesson plans and resources, the pack supports curriculum linked conservation education, for better understanding of environmental and climate issues facing cultures around the world. To help get teachers involved, they have all been given free entry to the zoo on the day.
Oasis manager Jack Williams says, “Madagascar is a unique and special environment, with over 80% of all its plants and animals found nowhere else on the planet. Sadly, many, like our lemurs, are in the world’s top 20 most endangered species, which is why action is vital. Excitingly, engagement by local schools can make a measurable difference through reforestation or species protection projects.”
All Lemur Bounce activities are included in standard zoo entry and ‘animal encounter’ fees, with 10% of admission takings going to MfMs’ Forests and Livelihoods Project. The zoo’s first Lemur Bounce day in 2018 raised over £300, which all went to restoring lemur habitat through reforestation.
The Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is open for amazing animal activities and education 7 days a week, 10am till dusk.
