\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f Welcome to Money for Madagascar (MfM)\u2019s Annual Mailing 2025.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The mailing is our opportunity to look with one eye on the past and one eye on the future, taking inspiration from the Malagasy proverb \u2013 \u2018<\/span>Ataovy dian-tana: jerena ny aloha, todihana ny afara.<\/span><\/i>\u2019; \u2018behave like the chameleon \u2013 look forward and observe behind\u2019.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

And this year, the phrase is particularly apposite.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The last 12 months have contained some enormous international changes which impact people including the Malagasy communities with which we work, as well as developments \u2013 still ongoing \u2013 within Money for Madagascar to stay agile and advance our founding principles of being led by the needs and creativity of the Malagasy communities we serve. Equally, 2026 is an important landmark year for MfM \u2013 our 40<\/span>th<\/span> anniversary as an organisation.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

In this context, we are delighted to present our Annual Report<\/a>, the annual newsletter from the AAA-B<\/a> children\u2019s centres, information about our Big Give campaign<\/a> for Malagasy children, information about our 2026 Calendar<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which this year is dedicated to our 40<\/span>th<\/span> anniversary, highlighting stories of resilience and transformation in Madagascar and the value of partnerships making all this happen \u2013 and information about what we have planned for this special year<\/a>.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

And our 40<\/span>th<\/span> Anniversary is a good place to start.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

We started as an organisation in 1986, when Malagasy friends of our founder Barbara Prys-Williams stepped up to take action to react to natural disasters and the economic crisis which struck Madagascar. They reached out to Barbara to see if she could help raise funds to back their ideas and, with help from her husband Allan and the Swansea Quaker Meeting, she did. Through the last 40 years, we have been guided by and worked to live up to this ethos: we work with Malagasy organisations and communities to provide help and also to support them to build their own resilience. We are here to unlock the Malagasy potential to deliver Malagasy solutions to Malagasy challenges.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

We are excited to celebrate our birthday with you all, our supporters, partners and communities in Madagascar and in the UK. 40 years of strong collaboration and mutual support deserve a huge recognition of your unfailing trust to the work we do together and why it matters. We are deeply grateful for such a shared commitment and passion to Madagascar. We are sure that our anniversary\u2019s slogan, defined together with our partners, describes well how we want to live our values of collaboration and partnership: <\/span>‘Ny hazo tokana tsy mba ala, ny firaisakina no hery’:<\/span><\/i> ‘One tree does not make a forest, together we are stronger.’ <\/span><\/i>(or, in a shortened version, <\/span>‘Ny Firaisakina no hery’<\/span><\/i>:<\/span> ‘Together we are stronger’<\/span><\/i>).\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

We have enclosed in this year’s mailing (available in the links above and below) information about what we will be doing and when, including competitions, celebration events, projects and capacity- and partnership-building initiatives, and you can find out more on our website. Please do share the document \u2013 put it up in a public place, circulate it to your friends, family, colleagues and organisations: we welcome one and all to be part of the celebrations!\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Looking back on this year, we feel proud – and incredibly grateful – for what <\/span>we<\/span><\/i> have accomplished together. Because of your continued belief in our purpose, children are learning in safer, happier schools; families are building more secure livelihoods; and communities are taking the lead in protecting Madagascar\u2019s precious environment.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

One example we are especially excited about is the newly-built mentoring centre in Ambohidratrimo. It is already full of young people studying, dreaming about their futures, and discovering skills they can carry into work and life.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The building is entirely powered with clean and reliable energy, supplied as part of the Solar United Madagascar consortium,\u202fin which we work with our partners, strengthening our commitment to environmental protection.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Across Madagascar, local groups are driving transformation in their own villages. Through savings and loans groups and climate-smart farming, more than 5,000 people are improving their incomes while caring for the land that sustains them. And by supporting 20 schools in rural areas, we have helped over 8,000 pupils, teachers and parents gain better access to education, well-being and opportunity – all while continuing to stand beside the 560 most vulnerable children who rely on care centres for shelter, nourishment, health and protection.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Every step forward has been possible because you have stayed with us – even through a year of global uncertainty.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

This uncertainty is far from over. Major aid cuts announced by governments around the world will make life even harder for many of the communities we work with. Madagascar alone is expected to lose around \u00a395m in support by 2026. Although we do not rely solely on government funding, the people we serve most certainly do rely on such funding.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

And yet, there is hope. We are thrilled to have secured a new UK government Darwin Initiative grant this year, which will enable 800 farmers and their families to build resilient livelihoods while caring for their land and local environment<\/a>. We are determined that Madagascar continues to be recognised for its global importance – and that Malagasy communities are supported to lead the way.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

As always, more must be done. And as always, your support is vital. We know that children in Madagascar require health, education and in many cases urgent protection and care assistance, which our Children for the Future programme is working to help ensure.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

And our mentoring centre is an example of where we are helping young people lay the foundations for successful futures, and whole communities direct, immediate, life-improving technology and initiatives. The need is there: with your support we, our partners and Malagasy communities, are meeting and will continue to meet it.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

While we have entered a new world, we have never been better-placed to do it. This year has seen a major shift: Money for Madagascar is becoming more than ever a <\/span>Malagasy-led<\/span><\/i> organisation. We are a single global unit, operating from and in Madagascar whilst mobilising global skills and expertise to amplify and support Malagasy leadership.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

You will now understand why we have chosen our anniversary\u2019s slogan. We truly are stronger together.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n
