{"id":17188,"date":"2023-04-11T11:00:13","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T11:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/?p=17188"},"modified":"2023-04-11T11:00:13","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T11:00:13","slug":"vegetable-gardens-and-school-canteens-spring-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/mg\/vegetable-gardens-and-school-canteens-spring-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"(English) Vegetable Gardens and School Canteens &#8211; Spring 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"qtranxs-available-languages-message qtranxs-available-languages-message-mg\">Miala tsiny fa tsy mbola misy amin'ny teny malagasy ity lahatsoratra ity.<\/p><p><\/p>\n<h5>We have a project to create and develop vegetable gardens and school canteens in two schools &#8211; EPP Mahatsara and EPP Andasifahatelo.\u00a0 Providing the children and their parents with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills will help ensure food security for these communities.\u00a0\u00a0 They also learn about the natural environment and protecting Madagascar&#8217;s unique biodiversity.<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-17191\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Environment-Education-Mar-23-300x138.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Environment-Education-Mar-23-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Environment-Education-Mar-23-1024x472.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Environment-Education-Mar-23-768x354.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Environment-Education-Mar-23-600x276.jpg 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Environment-Education-Mar-23.jpg 1309w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/h5>\n<h5>Students learn about planting according to the season and the rotation of crops.\u00a0 They successfully grew crops of different vegetables this year including courgettes, potatoes, pineapples, greens and beans.\u00a0 Parents and teachers were also responsible for breeding and raising rabbits and chickens.\u00a0 These provide both meat for the school canteens but also fertiliser for the gardens.\u00a0 A technician maintains the gardens during the school holidays and there are plans to expand the diversity of crops in the future.<\/h5>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>Students, teachers and parents have also learnt about market gardening.\u00a0 The project aims to reduce the amount of slash and burn agriculture through teaching more sustainable agricultural techniques.\u00a0 Alongside this, the students are learning about the importance of protecting the natural environment and habitat for wildlife.\u00a0 In December, students visited the Mitsinjo forest project to learn about the unique wildlife in Madagascar.<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-17190\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Parents-agriculture-Mar-23-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Parents-agriculture-Mar-23-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Parents-agriculture-Mar-23-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Parents-agriculture-Mar-23-600x449.jpg 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Parents-agriculture-Mar-23.jpg 793w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/h5>\n<h5>Since the start of the school year, there has been an increase in the number of students benefitting from the canteens in both schools.\u00a0 They now provide lunch (rice and vegetables, meat) every day of the week from Monday to Friday to all students who are present.<\/h5>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>Students can see the direct correlation between improved agricultural techniques, increasing productivity and full stomachs!\u00a0 Alongside this, building an understanding of the environmental implications of less productive agriculture will protect wildlife.<\/h5>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Miala tsiny fa tsy mbola misy amin&#8217;ny teny malagasy ity lahatsoratra ity.
