{"id":23083,"date":"2025-09-08T21:15:52","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T21:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/?p=23083"},"modified":"2025-09-08T21:15:52","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T21:15:52","slug":"90-per-cent-of-malagasy-people-living-in-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/mg\/90-per-cent-of-malagasy-people-living-in-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"(English) 90 per cent of Malagasy people living in poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"qtranxs-available-languages-message qtranxs-available-languages-message-mg\">Miala tsiny fa tsy mbola misy amin'ny teny malagasy ity lahatsoratra ity.<\/p><p><\/p>\n<h4>On Thursday 5<sup>th<\/sup> June 2025, the World Bank updated its \u2013 and the world\u2019s \u2013 poverty metric.<\/h4>\n<h4>Up to that date, the international poverty baseline \u2013 the line below which anyone is defined as living in poverty \u2013 had been an income of US$2.15 (\u00a31.59 at 8<sup>th<\/sup> September 2025) or less per day.<\/h4>\n<h4>From then, the income per day has increased to US$3 &#8211; \u00a32.22 per day.<\/h4>\n<h4>The World Bank, whose metric is the guide used by every organisation to define poverty, made the update to reflect its \u2018purchasing power parity\u2019 research, into the global situation as at 2021. The previous baseline was calculated using the data from the previous research, related to 2017\u2019s PPP.<\/h4>\n<h4>Some outlets have reported that the change has \u2018put\u2019 \u2018125 million more\u2019 people in poverty, but even though there are now 817m people classified as living in poverty compared to 692m before the update, of course it has not.<\/h4>\n<h4>What it has done is more accurately reflect the lived experience of men, women and children experiencing challenges including food insecurity and poor health, in countries across the world. Here, the proportion of the population living in poverty has been revealed to be no longer 79.9 per cent \u2013 itself a shocking and unacceptable rate \u2013 but now 90 per cent.<\/h4>\n<h4>That is, nine out of ten Malagasy men, women and children are today living on or below the international poverty baseline: 28.764m of Madagascar\u2019s 31.96 million people are living in poverty. Just 319,600 Malagasy people are not.<\/h4>\n<h4>This is not an \u2018acceptable level\u2019 \u2013 even if <em>any<\/em> person living in poverty were.<\/h4>\n<h4>And these are not &#8216;just&#8217; numbers. Every one of those people is a person, with a name, a past, with thoughts, feelings, cares and desires. With memories and plans for the future. No-one should be forced to miss meals, go to bed hungry. No child should miss a day of school because of illness brought on by lack of food, or by dirty water. We live on a planet which has never once produced too little for every person to live in comfort and security, and yet Madagascar is a country in which nine in every ten people is forced by poverty to go without.<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22528 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/S102-7311-DanielAustin-HR-scaled-e1746443146620-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/S102-7311-DanielAustin-HR-scaled-e1746443146620-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/S102-7311-DanielAustin-HR-scaled-e1746443146620-1024x497.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/S102-7311-DanielAustin-HR-scaled-e1746443146620-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/S102-7311-DanielAustin-HR-scaled-e1746443146620-600x291.jpg 600w, https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/S102-7311-DanielAustin-HR-scaled-e1746443146620.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>We <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/education-for-life\/progress-report-education-for-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work<\/a> to enable Malagasy communities to define the challenges they face, and <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/helping-vulnerable-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provide the platform<\/a>, including equipment, training and cash, they need to formulate and enact the solutions to them, while <a href=\"https:\/\/moneyformadagascar.org\/our-programmes\/forests-and-livelihoods\/resilient-forests-and-livelihoods-30-months-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protecting and expanding the rainforests<\/a> upon which every living thing on Earth relies.<\/h4>\n<h4>This has always been an urgent matter, and a vital activity.<\/h4>\n<h4>Madagascar is the world\u2019s fourth-poorest country.
