Money For Madagascar’s Emergency Appeal
Since the devastating fire at the Akany Avoko Bevalala (AAB) boys’ centre on 20th September, we’ve been working tirelessly to provide immediate relief and rebuild what was lost. Here’s an update on our efforts so far:
Immediate Response:
With the support of our partners, some of the boys have been placed with foster families through the newly registered fostering association. A few boys have also been able to return to relatives. The remaining boys are being temporarily accommodated in another building at the Bevalala site, allowing them to continue attending school and maintain a sense of normalcy.
Community Support:
We have been overwhelmed by the incredible support from the community. Several organisations, associations, businesses and individuals have supported the centre with immediate needs such as new mattresses, solar lamps, shelves, food and school supplies. We’re also exploring options for rebuilding the dormitory, and several organisations have expressed interest in assisting with reconstruction efforts.
Steering Committee Established:
A steering committee has been formed to address both the immediate needs of the boys and the long-term reconstruction efforts. Money for Madagascar is playing a crucial role on this committee, working closely with other organisations to coordinate an effective response to the crisis.
Donations Delivered:
The MfM team visited Bevalala on 27th September to assess the boys’ remaining urgent needs. On 30th September, we returned to deliver vital supplies, including pillows, blankets, shoes, toiletries, school supplies, cooking pots, and essential food items like rice, oil, sugar, and salt.
While there is still much work to be done, your generous donations have allowed us to take critical steps in ensuring the boys’ safety and comfort. We will continue to keep you updated on the progress of the rebuilding efforts and how your contributions are making a difference in their lives.
