Water point: changing the education and lives of youngsters and school staff

Almost 200 children and staff at a Malagasy primary school now have reliable access to safe, clean water, thanks to Money for Madagascar, its partner and funders.

The 191 children, and seven staff, at the EPP Ambohipeno, five km from the centre of Antsirabe, had previously had to walk more than two km round trip to collect water from the nearest supply point, and even this was too little for the school’s needs and of questionable quality.

The pupils and staff risked exhaustion, missing lessons and illness with the water they could collect, and its shortage forced them to abandon activities such as growing food and flowers in their school garden, and even forced the closure of the school canteen.

But the school’s new water point, officially ‘opened’ on Tuesday (26th August 2025), will solve these problems.

The school’s principal, Rija Andriatsitohaina, said : ‘We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this project. Thanks to this water point, our daily needs will finally be covered. The school requires about 200 liters of water per day to wash the paintings, ensure the hygiene of students and staff, supply the canteen and maintain the garden. These activities, suspended for years due to a lack of sufficient drinking water, will now resume fully.

The water-point – and two others at EPP Ambohimiarina Tamponala (opened on Wednesday 27th August), and EPP Anosiarivo (opening today, Friday 29th August 2025), which will each deliver clean water and all it enables, including activities, improved health, and greater comfort for the children and those teaching them, at a vital part of those children’s lives – was created thanks to the efforts of Money for Madagascar partner the Miarintsoa Association, with funding from MfM donated by the Haydon Kirkwood Charitable Trust.

Miarintsoa, using this funding, has also provided the schools with tools for the water points’ maintenance and repair, ensuring their durability for many years to come.
